ASCIANO
This town, now used as a tourist accommodation, was until recently a property of the Basilica of Sant'Agata and has always aroused curiosity for its name. in fact, one would think that, at least in distant times, there was a religious building there. In fact, nothing of the current structure reveals the remains of a church, but there is instead a trace of an ancient stone tower.
From recent investigations carried out on the sighting and visual signaling stations, it immediately became clear that the place corresponded to one of the most important points for the control of the territory of the Scialenga. In fact, the ancient structure is located in a position that guarantees visual communication between different towers and fortifications, scattered over the trritorio.
Indeed, it is the only location capable of commencing Torrentino (Ombrone valley) with the Serre, Rapolano and the Montalceto tower, guaranteeing widespread control of the territories north-east of Asciano.
The peculiar and important function performed in the past by this place, from an idea of why its property was historically one of the most important local religious institutions. In fact, analyzing the sighting points identified by the aforementioned survey, their ownership seems equally divided between various religious institutions present on the spot and the local temporal power, this at least for a long historical period.
