Edicola viaria di San Michele Arcangelo

ASCIANO

On the front wall of what was once the Hospitale of the same name, there remains a now very faded fresco that in the Middle Ages indicated to pilgrims of Lauretana the presence of a reception facility.

This testimony of great historical value has not aroused particular interest on an artistic level, at least until today, despite having been there for more than 500 years. cause

The interest is certainly not helped by the fact that it is now difficult to read its contours due to: a dirty and yellowed glass cover; the absence of a recent conservative restoration.

Since the artist who created it in the Renaissance period is unknown, below we must limit ourselves to describing the figures present.

On the left:
San Michele Arcangelo fighting with a small dragon.

In the center at the top:
The Madonna with the child in her arms lying on a cloud.

On the right:
Saint Agatha holding the tray of her severed breasts.

While Saint Michael is the one to whom the Hospitale is dedicated, Saint Agatha represents the link between the same and the opposite Pieve dedicated to the Patron Saint.
